Based off the findings of the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) an average of 28 people in the United States die in a drunk driving related incident… That averages to 1 person killed every 52 minutes – this means 10,142 people lost their lives to a preventable and fatal drunk driving incident.
RISK FACTORS
Driving after drinking is deadly. However, this continues to occur throughout the United States. If you or someone you know drive while impaired, you could be arrested, or worse; you could cause serious harm, injury or death.
Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers (with BACs of 0.8 g/dL or higher).
In every state, it’s illegal to drive drunk, yet many continue to do so which has lead to one person killed in a drunk driving accident every 52 minutes in the United States.
TEEN DRIVERS
The leading cause of death for teenagers, and approximately 1/4 of underage drivers can be attributed to drinking & driving.
In 2018, 24% of young drivers 15 to 20 years old who were killed in crashes had BACs of .01 g/dL or higher.
In order to reduce the fatalities caused by drinking and driving many states adopted a minimum drinking age of 21.
According to some of the most recent data collected approximately 31,959 lives have been saved from the years of 1975 to 2017.
While raising the legal drinking age limit has greatly helped protect citizens from unsafe road conditions, a percentage of drunk drivers with BACs of .08 g/dL or higher were 21 to 24 year old.
MOTORCYCLISTS
From recent studies it was found from 2018 motorcycle riders involved with fatal crashes were found to have the highest percentage of alcohol-impairment than any other driver.
4,675 people operating a motorcycle were killed in traffic crashes. Of those motorcycle riders, 1,213 (26%) were drunk (BAC of .08 g/dL or higher).
The 40-and-older age group made up 53 percent of drunk motorcyclists killed in 2018.
